I have to ask a honest question, are Latinos fucking stupid? Why the fuck would you support Trump or visit this restaurant to be asked for your green card, per the article?
Not my thinking, but I had to work out the some of the internalized imperialism, so I have some experience with this.
I work hard. I follow the rules. I speak the language. I came here legally. I am a good American.
I work hard. But I always feel like some aren’t. This is a great country and people like me make it great. I don’t want to pay for those who don’t work.
I love my country of origin. People I know were wonderful. But some don’t work hard. And some come to America. They don’t learn the language. They don’t appreciate this great country.
There are other lazy countries and America is letting them in. They claim to be refugees. But they are lying and they are lazy and they are making America weak. America is great and kind. That kindness is allowing lazy people in and making America weak and I am paying for it.
Trump won’t let these lazy people in who don’t follow the rules. Only the hard ones who do follow the rules like me. See I have a green card. A great country like American wouldn’t have let me in if I wasn’t a hard worker. I’m not lazy like those claiming to be refugees or sneaking in. I am so proud that I will show you my green card because I’m doing my part!

How?
Taxes. Government handouts are funded by my taxes which the government can only take because I work hard. I don’t mind taxes in principle, but not for handouts.

Not just Latinos. Met high school friends today and one of them is very racist and sort of anti immigrant but we are all first generation immigrants. Yes he has a stable job so he thinks he’s a good Canadian and thinks being anti-immigrant attitude doesn’t apply to him

Unfortunately all of the white people also are the product of European colonization or immigration, but because all that book learnin’ really makes them mad they too think they’re better than anybody because their ancestors fought for America in World War II! Obviously this is a vast oversimplification, but there has been a constant campaign of anti-intellectualism, nationalism, fascism, classism, racism, (etc etc), and pushing evangelical Christianity into the government for many years, and every year it’s become stronger and stronger.
But what should be worrying to many is that, while it’s most visible in the US now, it’s happening everywhere. Brexit had the same backers as those who wanted Trump in power. Germany, France, Italy, etc are battling a return of right wing support
It seems to be a global phenomenon that transcends race or nation, has some roots in capitalism, some roots in foreign power interference (like Russia), and some roots in just people being shitty. And while we might be able to fix the first parts, I’m not convinced we can fix the last one

Because many of them are only one or two generations removed from places like Cuba, where Authoritarian dictatorships wrap themselves in flags of communism and socialism. They believe the Republican propaganda at face value that labels everything they don’t want as communism and socialism.

The wealthy Cubans who fled the Revolution didn’t escape “communism” or “socialism” in the way Republican talking points frame it. They escaped the end of their own rule. Before 1959, Cuba was a U.S.-backed playground for the rich, run under the Batista dictatorship, where U.S. corporations and a tiny Cuban elite owned most of the land, businesses, and sugar profits. Ordinary Cubans lived in deep poverty, while this elite class grew fat off their labor.
When the Revolution came, that wealth was nationalized, land was redistributed, and healthcare and education became rights. To the poor, that was liberation. To the rich, that was “oppression.” They didn’t flee authoritarianism, they fled accountability for decades of exploitation. They were like today’s billionaire class, except with a tropical climate and more casinos.
The tragedy is that U.S. propaganda turned their loss of privilege into a morality tale about “escaping communism”, a story that still gets recycled to scare working people here into defending the same kind of elite that exploits them.
One can only hope Trump’s destruction of the American empire can motivate Americans to do a real revolution, and force the billionaires to escape to another country.
And they learned that the left is bad rather than that authoritarianism is bad. Wrong lesson.
Many of them grew up experiencing “communism” or “socialism” as bad in their daily lives, it’s the reason they usually left. Whether what they experienced actually matches the real definitions or not is secondary.
They come to the US and one of the two parties is using phrasing that matches their experience, so that’s what they will flock to.
When in reality it was the US that kept Cuba down.
