The Supreme Court on Monday appeared sympathetic to the argument by a Catholic Charities chapter that Wisconsin violated the Constitution when it refused to give the group the same exemption from the state’s unemployment tax that it provides to churches, religious schools, and some religious groups. Justices from both sides of the ideological spectrum seemed to agree that the state’s denial of the exemption amounted to discrimination against Catholic Charities, with Justice Elena Kagan suggesting that it was “pretty fundamental that we don’t treat some religions better than others. And we certainly don’t do it based on the content of the religious doctrine that those religions preach.”
Bullshit. They should be treated like every other nonprofit. Churches should be paying taxes too.
Churches, like billionaires, should be paying extra taxes.
They’re going the wrong direction on this. They should be reducing the tax exemption for religions. Churches are nothing more than predatory corporate entities, and have no right to tax exemption simply because they promote neolithic mythology.
Why does an obvious scam operation like Scientology get tax exemption, or all these little home-based religion? There’s a street near me that has 13 family homes that claim to be a churches.
Eventually, you will have religious corporations like Chickfila and Hobby Lobby demanding tax exemptions just because they support religious bullshit.
Tax ALL churches religions, heavily.
Thank GOODNESS! I ASSUME this WONT extend to Muslims or Satanists or Jews though!
We will sieze and garrison churches in the near future.
Remember when judges would recuse themselves when they had a conflict of interest.
Well, it was a good run. Clearly I need to become a religious charity.
